A Conservation Area is an area of recognised special architectural or historic interest the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance.
Central Bedfordshire Council has 61 designated conservation areas which form the core of a rich and valued local historic environment. This includes the 22 conservation areas in the former South Bedfordshire District..
As part of its involvement in the development of the joint Luton and Southern Bedfordshire Local Development Framework (LDF), Central Bedfordshire Council is undertaking a programme of conservation area reviews to ensure that the special interest and character of these designated areas are properly understood and respected during the planning of future local growth.
The results of each conservation area review are set out in an ‘Appraisal’ document, which assesses the setting, character and appearance of the conservation area, and identifies opportunities for enhancement. The Appraisals are being produced as advisory documents to assist future conservation area management through the planning system.
Details of local conservation area review launch events and draft Appraisal documents can be viewed on the Central Bedfordshire website. Please click the link below to take part in the review exercises by reading the draft Appraisals and completing and returning the accompanying questionnaire.
